Making an effort is what taking a cruise is all about! Enough said! Sorry to those who disagree. You dont need a jacket and tie, just a nice shirt/dress pants and shoes. If you wish to be informal the entire cruise then eat at the buffet. Why cant you dress properly for the main dining room and specialty restaurants. If you are spending thousands of dollars( check your bill afterwards) taking you wife/girlfriend or loved ones on a cruise. Lots of guess believe tee shirts/hats and shorts are impressive. We had two formal nights were everyone was supposed to dress to impress. My major problem with Carnival it is considered either the party cruise line or the lax. The Ugly- sorry I am about offend a few folks right now, but has has to be said. The islands we nice but not would you would expect, Except for Curacao Aruba and Dominican republic are poor countries. The Spa was good but they try to sell you everything, they are not owned by Carnival but contracted. The IMAX theater was good but it cost $11 for the movie. Shows were ok not great, the comedians were funny. The carnival app to schedule anytime dining was good, very little wait to be seated. Boarding was quick and easy, rooms we ready by 1:30. If cost is high get a Havana interior room, you will be out side in your private area most of your time anyway. We met lots of people from the rest of the US, never had to search for a seat/lounger. We had our own pool and bar and Havana service. Once you go Havana you never go back! Our balcony could have held 20 people on it. Our cabin steward was awesome, our room was a Havana room. The Good- the ship was clean and just about all the staff we encountered was friendly and helpful. Debarkation was terrible 1 hrs in line with most folks carrying luggage down steps. Breakfast had 5 choices and that's it, the sandwich shop was available for breakfast and lunch but you waited line while 2 people made sandwiches. Restaurant we ok, the steak house/Italian resturant/tappanyaki were all decent. We left the line as the cigarette smoke from the Casino was too much, yes they allow smoking so i kept my cash in my pocket and left. They needed more show times for the comedians, if you got to the venue 15 minutes before you were in a line that stretched all the way in to the Casino. We finally left with out signing our drink bill, good luck trying to get a drink at the comedy shows, 200 people room and two drink takers?By the time you go your drink the show was over. Many times only two bartenders were working, dining room also short handed-waiting for drinks food at times. Dumb! Complaints First- Our ship was not at capacity and seating a problem/Elevators/they were short staffed, trying to get a drink was a problem. Luckily we were near the rear of the ship 3 floors below the lido deck, we used the stairs. You would wait sometimes 15 min to get an elevator to go to the floor you wanted. Someone brilliant idea was to have elevators only go the certain floors, if you were going to deck 10 and someone else going to deck 11 you could not use the same elevator. On this 8 day cruise we may have use them 5 times.

The elevators were a joke and not in a funny way.

Getting seating was a bit challenging, they had two atriums vs the normal one large ones on most ships. The walk ways between these areas we always crowded. They had two little pools for such a large ship, two little breakfast/buffet areas also. The Horizon is a nice ship in very good condition, however a poor design. We chose this Cruise line as we were on the Carnival Freedom last year, it had a fire and they gave us a discount for a future cruise. This is our 10th cruise and we a have traveled on several cruise lines.
